A professional equalizer is an extension of a bass and treble control on a domestic amplifier. It allows an engineer to adjust the tone of music in ways that improves the sound.When you are mixing your audio tracks one of the most powerful tools available is the equalizer. An eq is a tool which allows you to sculpt the tone of an instrument or sound.Most mixing consoles and digital audio workstations have an eq built in. So I would try a boost of 8dB and a Q of 1.0 and a frequency of 4kHz, the ear is very sensitive around 4kHz so it will be easy to hear changes. Then with the above settings you can sweep up and down with the frequency knob and hear the boost as it smoothly scrolls up and down the frequency ranges. Consider the following as a rough guide, bass frequencies 20Hz- 240Hz, lower midrange 240Hz-400Hz, midrange 400Hz to 4kHz, upper mid range 4kHz - 8kHz, high frequencies 8kHz - 13kHz, air frequencies, 13kHz +. So as you move around the band you can focus on what instrument you are eqing and consider the changes, i.e. there will not be much bass in a violin, there will not be much air in an upright bass, so consider the register of the instrument and the frequency you are eqing.Shelf controls are also common in mixing and mastering (especially mixing consoles) they generally work on the high frequencies and low frequencies, they are different as the cut or boost affects all the frequencies below the selected frequency for a low shelf and all the frequencies above in the case of a high shelf. They are good for broad changes at the extremes of the spectrum.Often on a mixing console the frequency is fixed as some useful value such as 100Hz and 12kHz.This extreme use of eq is fine for practicing but in actual use the eqing may not be as drastic.
